This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, CFC, Singing Ensemble, Green Bags, Worship, PECSC, organ recital and more!

The end of the month is often full at BFC, but this week, look out! We’ll be busy all weekend, with…1) Friday Night at the Movies this Friday, 3/28: this month we offer the compelling 2012 documentary A Place at the Table. This film uses personal stories, colorful graphics and an array of sobering statistics to illuminate the plight of the 49 million Americans struggling with food insecurity. Those of you who volunteer at the Food Pantry know plenty about this crisis, but this film gives an additional perspective that is not to be missed. See attached flyer for more details.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00, discussion to follow.

2) The quarterly gathering of the Christian Friends Conference, all day on Saturday, 3/29: you are invited to take part in waiting worship and Bible reading in the manner of Conservative Friends, and to share fellowship and  discussion with Christian Quakers from around the Bay Area and beyond. 9 AM – 4:30 PM. Beverages and bagels will be provided in the morning; please bring your own lunch. See the second  file attached for the full schedule.

3) Our weekly gathering for worship, learning and fellowship on Sunday, 3/30: first off, we will be collecting the church’s contributions to the Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project a week early, so please bring your greeen bags with you and bring them into worship!

We’ll begin at 9 AM, with a Singing Ensemble rehearsal. Then at 10 AM, our Sunday School classes for children and adults, including the membership/Quakerism class, will meet. In meeting for worship at 11 AM, we will seek the Living God together in prayer, song from the congregation and the Singing Ensemble,  a message from the Scriptures, and silence. Fellowship time follows worship; the Peace, Environment and Christian Social Concerns Committee will meet during this time, from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.

4) A special event on Sunday afternoon, 3/30: in celebration of his 85th birthday, Charles Blue would like to invite everyone to an organ mini-recital at St Paul Lutheran Church, 1658 Excelsior Avenue in Oakland, at 2 PM. Carpooling may be possible; check with Charles or Brian to see who will be going.

Blessings to all!

This Sunday @BFC: Singing Ensemble, Sunday School, Worship, Monthly Meeting

Dear Friends:

This Sunday, 3/16, the Singing Ensemble will rehearse at 9 AM. Sunday School classes for children and adults, including the Quakerism class, meet at 10 AM. The Body gathers for worship at 11 AM, with shared song, prayer, and our monthly extended time of waiting upon the Lord in stillness.

Our monthly potluck lunch follows worship; please bring a dish to share if you can, or a few dollars to help with the purchase of supplies. (If you are bringing something to eat, please also bring a list of ingredients so that people know what’s in your dish.) Then at 1 PM, there will be the Monthly Meeting with a Concern for Business. Members should please attend, and all others are welcome.

Note that while the Singing Ensemble will rehearse this Sunday, there will not be a presentation until later this month.

Finally, I would appreciate your prayers for the Friends World Committee counsultation in Sacramento this weekend–for all those traveling, and that this would be an opportunity for God to open our hearts to one another in mutual listening and love.

I will be in the office on Monday and Tuesday of this coming week; please be in touch if you need anything.

This weekend at BFC: Brother Outsider, Trustees, Sunday School and Worship!

Dear Friends:

Here is what’s happening at BFC this weekend:

1) Tomorrow, Friday, 2/28, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies, with the 2003 documentary Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin. Rustin, an African American Quaker, was one of the seminal figures of the civil rights movement, as a close advisor to Dr. King and the architect of the 1963 March on Washington. Rustin was also open about his homosexuality in a period far less accepting than the present.

This time around we are privileged to have a very special guest: the film’s co-director, Nancy D. Kates, is a Berkeley resident and has offered to attend and participate in the discussion! Please come and meet Nancy and see her thought-provoking film.

See attached flyer for more details. As always, ADMISSION IS FREE! Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00, discussion to follow.

2) On Sunday, 3/2, the Trustees Committee will start things off, meeting at 9 AM. Then, at 10 AM, our Sunday School classes for children and adults will meet, including the Quakerism/membership class. In meeting for worship at 11 AM, we will hear a message drawn from John 15, as we continue to consider discipleship and disciple-making. We will also sing, pray and wait together on the Lord. Fellowship time follows worship.

Note: the Missionary, Outreach and Christian Education committee will not meet this Sunday. At our last meeting we agreed to postpone to Thursday of next week, 3/6, at 2 PM at the meetinghouse. See you then!

Please join us as we gather!

You can come by as early as 9:30 AM and there will be things to do through 1 PM. It looks like rain, so don’t forget your rain gear.

Also, if you’re participating in BFC’s “neighborhood” and didn’t bring in your bag last Sunday, you’re welcome to bring yours by any time between 10  AM and 12:30 PM.

If you haven’t but would like to, there’s still time to sign up! Just contact me and I’ll let you know what’s available in the schedule. This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, Trustees, Worship and PECSC!

Dear Friends:

There’s a lot happening this weekend at Berkeley Friends Church. Here’s the rundown:

1) Tomorrow, Friday, 1/24, Friday Night at the Movies returns, with the 1951 French drama Diary of a Country Priest. Director Robert Bresson’s masterful adaptation of Georges Bernanos’s novel tells the story of a dedicated priest in a rural village whose best efforts only seem to alienate him from the very population he’s supposed to be serving. In French, with English subtitles. See attached flyer for more details.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00, discussion to follow.

2) On Sunday, 1/26, the Trustees will have a called meeting at 9 AM. Then at 10 AM, we have our regular Sunday School classes for adults & children. Meeting for Worship begins at 11 AM, including a message based on Matthew 4:12-23. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee meets at 1 PM.

3) A reminder that the following Sunday, February 2, is our day to participate in the FUM Chain of Prayer! Please see me after worship this Sunday if you would like to participate. For more information and for a guide to FUM’s ministries which you can use to structure your time of prayer, see this link.

God’s blessings and peace to each one of you!

This weekend @BFC: Hatcher memorial service, Singing Ensemble, Sunday School, worship, Monthly Meeting

Dear Friends:

This Saturday, 1/18, at 1 PM, we will gather to celebrate the lives of Ellen & Gordon Hatcher.

We could still use some help with setup (setting up tables,  tablecloths and decorations). The meetinghouse will be open by 11:30 AM.

Then, on Sunday, 1/19, the Singing Ensemble will rehearse at 9 AM. Then Sunday School classes for children and adults meet at 10 AM. We gather for worship at 11 AM, seeking God’s presence together with an extended period of open worship, corporate prayer, and songs of praise from the Ensemble and the congregation.

Our monthly potluck lunch follows worship; please bring a dish to share if you can, or a few dollars to help with the purchase of supplies. (If you are bringing something to eat, please also bring a list of ingredients so that people know what’s in your dish.) Then at 1 PM, we will gather for Monthly Meeting with a Concern for Business. Members should please attend, and all others are welcome.

We hope to have you with us as we gather to remember, to give thanks, and to praise the God of all creation.

This Sunday @BFC: SInging Ensemble, carol singing, worship, PECSC Committee

Dear Friends:

I was just talking to a Friend who observed how feverishly both motorists and pedestrians seem to rushing about lately. I know that I certainly have been, as I try and get everything on my list checked off. There are so many things to get done, I am finding it a real challenge to keep some things from dropping off of it entirely–especially finding regular time to seek God’s presence. It’s one of the ironies of our age that Advent, a season which is supposed to inculcate patient waiting and anticipation, has been so overwhelmed by gift-buying and party-attending and a frenzy of so many other things. It’s really difficult to refrain from doing and rushing, and simply wait.

What’s on your list this Christmas? I pray that it includes finding time to remember the coming of the Lord, in the midst of everything else, and to join in corporate worship.

And that’s what we’ll be about this Sunday, 12/22: the Singing Ensemble will rehearse at 9:30 AM (note the later-than-usual time).  Then, rather than our usual Sunday School classes, we will gather at 10:30 AM for carol singing in the worship room. In Meeting for Worship at 11 AM, we will read one part of the story of Jesus’ birth from the Gospel of Matthew, and consider together the mystery of the incarnation. The Singing Ensemble will also have some special music, and we’ll also sing some Christmas hymns together.

As always, fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee will meet at 1 PM.

May the Light of Christ enlighten you in this season,

Brian Young
