This weekend at BFC: Christian Friends Conference, Kni & Crochet, Singing Ensemble, worship, business meeting!

Dear Friends:

It’s a full weekend at Berkeley Friends Church. Here’s what is scheduled:

1) Tomorrow, Saturday, 9/14, we will host the quarterly meeting of the Christian Friends Conference–Western Region (CFC). You are invited to take part in waiting worship and Bible reading in the manner of Conservative Friends, and to share fellowship and an open discussion with Christian Quakers from around the Bay Area and beyond. 9 AM – 4:30 PM. Beverages and bagels will be provided in the morning; please bring your own lunch. See the attached for a schedule with full details.

2) Also on Saturday, the Knit & Crochet Fellowship will meet at the meetinghouse, at 11 AM. They will coordinate with CFC to share the space. Come see what these crafty folks are up to!

3) On Sunday, 9/15, the Singing Ensemble will meet to rehearse at 9 AM. Then, Sunday School classes for children and adults meet at 10 AM. We gather for worship at 11 AM, seeking God’s presence together with an extended period of open worship along with hymns and corporate prayer.

Our monthly potluck lunch follows worship; please bring a dish to share if you can, or a few dollars to help with the purchase of supplies. (If you are bringing something to eat, please also bring a list of ingredients so that people know what’s in your dish.) Then at 1 PM, we will gather for Monthly Meeting with a Concern for Business. Members should please attend, and all others are welcome.

(Please note that while the Singing Ensemble will rehearse at 9, there will not be a presentation this Sunday.)

We hope to have you with us for worship and fellowship this weekend!

This weekend at BFC: Harvest Day, Bolivian Friend Alicia Lucasi, Singing Ensemble, and more!

Dear Friends:

Here’s what’s happening this weekend at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) Saturday, 8/10, is the bimonthly Harvest Day for the Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project. All of the donations from the various neighborhoods will be coming in to the Food Pantry that morning. Volunteers are still needed to receive, weigh, sort and store the donations! You can come by as early as 9:30 AM and there will be things to do through 1 PM.

Also, if you’re participating in BFC’s “neighborhood” and didn’t bring in your bag last Sunday, you’re welcome to bring yours by any time between 10  AM and 12:30 PM.

2) On Sunday, 8/11, things start with our Sunday School classes for adults and children at 10 AM. In worship at 11 AM, it will be our privilege to hear from Bolivian Friend Alicia Lucasi, who will share a message entitled “On the Love of Neighbor”, drawing on Romans 13:9-10 and other Scripture passages.

Fellowship time follows worship, during which Alicia will do a presentation on the work of the Bolivian Quaker Education Fund.

Finally, the SInging Ensemble will rehearse at 1 PM.

3) A reminder that I will be away from Berkeley leading a delegation to Israel/Palestine with Christian Peacemaker Teams from this Sunday, 8/11, to Wednesday, 8/28. My next day back inthe office will likely be Friday the 30th. If there are any immediate needs during my absence, please contact Nikki Gage or another member of M&C.

The Peace of Christ to each one of you!

This Sunday @ BFC: Harvest Day Bags,Trustees, Worship, MOCE

Dear Friends:

After the heavy schedule of last weekend, this Sunday, 8/1 will be a little more relaxed:

A reminder: we will be bringing in our green bags with us when we come to worship! The Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project’s bimonthly Harvest Day is next Saturday, and we want to bring all of the church’s contributions together this Sunday in worship. So before you head out the door this Sunday, be sure to grab that bag full of food and bring it with you, and then when you get here, bring it into worship with you!

The schedule: we’ll start off with the Trustees Committee, meeting at 9 AM. Then, at 10 AM, our Sunday School classes for children and adults will meet. In meeting for worship at 11 AM, we will gather to praise God in song, lift up our joys and concerns, hear a reflection on the written Word, and listen together for the Living Word in our midst.

Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Missionary, Outreach and Christian Education Committee will meet at 1 PM.

Please join us as we seek God together!

Commemorate Hiroshima at Livermore Lab

Dear Friends:

A number of us have attended the vigil against nuclear weapons and other nuclear technology at the Livermore Labs every year on Good Friday. The organizations that sponsor this effort also have a similar event to commemorate Hiroshima and Nagasaki every year. The details follow.

Brian

=======================

Unfinished Business and Our Most Urgent Responsibility:

Banning the Bomb at Livermore Lab and Globally

Tuesday, August 6
7:00am
Livermore Lab NW corner
Vasco Rd & Patterson Pass Rd, Livermore, CA
with Daniel Ellsberg, Keynote Speaker
and special guests:
Rev. Nobuaki Hanaoka, Hibakusha, survivor of the bombing of Nagasaki
Cecile Piñeda, author
Pete Yamamoto, poet
Genyu Kai, traditional Okinawan music
Each year, to commemorate the anniversaries of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we hold an event at Livermore National Laboratory, one of the two facilities in the country that designs every U.S. nuclear weapon.
Please join us this year to remember these atrocities and demand the abolition of nuclear weapons at the site where new and modified nuclear weapons are being developed. At a time when federal funds for vital social services are being decimated by the budget sequester, we are demanding that money currently spent to maintain and modernize nuclear weapons (over $30 billion a year) be redirected to fund human needs.
This year we will gather at the northwest corner of the Lab on Tuesday, August 6, at 7:00am. We will hear from Daniel Ellsberg, Rev. Nobuaki Hanaoka, Cecile Pineda, and other speakers, Japanese Taiko drummers, traditional Okinawan music and more. Immediately following the program, there will be a short procession to the Livermore Lab’s West Gate. Those who choose will peacefully risk arrest, while others will provide legal witness and support.
For more information:
Download a PDF of the poster with more info. Or contact Tri-Valley CAREs, (925) 443-7148, www.trivalleycares.org
Parking will be marked along Patterson Pass Road at the corner of Vasco Road. Van pick-ups available from the Dublin-Pleasanton BART station. Must call to reserve a spot: (925) 443-7148.

How you can help:

  • Join us on Tuesday to speak out for a nuclear free world.
  • Help spread the word! Forward this email to your friends. Print out posters and post them in your neighborhood.
  • Groups can cosponsor the event and table at the event, individuals can help by making any donation you can afford. Make checks payable to Livermore Conversion Project and mail to P. O. Box 28119, Oakland, CA 94604.
We need your help if we are going to continue to be at the Lab every year to commemorate the horrific bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, Memorial Service, Sunday School & Worship, PECSC

Dear Friends:

Here are this weekend’s events at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) It seems like the last one was just last week, but tomorrow, Friday, 7/26, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This month we present the 2009 biopic Creation, which captures the legendary scientist Charles Darwin in a period of intense mourning–and expansive intellectual discovery–following the untimely death of his young daughter, Annie. Darwin’s work on his groundbreaking book On the Origin of Species and his questioning of God’s existence parallel one another, much to the chagrin of his devout wife.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Please invite your neighbors and friends. Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00 PM. Discussion follows the screening.

2) On Saturday, 7/27, we will gather with family and Friends of our member Andrew Secrest to give thanks for his life together. Memorial service begins at 11 AM. All are invited for a potluck meal following the service. We will need some help with setup, both on Friday night following Movie Night and on Saturday morning beginning at 9:45 AM.

3) On Sunday morning, 7/28, we will gather for Sunday School for adults and children, at 10 AM. Meeting for worship begins at 11 AM, with song, prayer, a message, and expectant waiting upon the Lord. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee will meet at 1 PM.

Please join us for learning, fellowship and worship!

Dear Friends:

Here are this weekend’s events at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) Tomorrow, Friday, 6/28, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This month’s offering is the 2008 documentary  At the Death House Door. This sobering film examines the state of the death penalty in Texas (which, just this week, executed its 500th inmate since 1976). We follow the remarkable career and spiritual journey of prison chaplain Carroll Pickett. Initially pro-execution, Pickett became an anti-death penalty activist after serving 15 years as the death house chaplain in the infamous “Walls” prison unit in Huntsville.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Please invite your neighbors and friends. Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00 PM. Discussion follows the screening.

2) On Saturday, 6/29, the Knit & Crochet Fellowship meets at 11 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Come see what others are working on and start a project for yourself!

Meeting for Worship begins at 11 AM, with a message from John Maurer and a presentation from the Singing Ensemble. Fellowship time, with refreshments from local producers, follows worship.

Dear Friends:

Here’s what’s happening this weekend at Berkeley Friends Church:

1) On Saturday, 6/22, we will have a Work Day to take care of the grounds. We’ll be concentrating on trimming trees & bushes, weeding, striping the parking lot, and other outside tasks. We’ll work from 10 AM to 3 PM; please bring your gardening tools and a brown bag lunch!

2) On Sunday, 6/23, things start at 10 AM with our regular Sunday School classes for adults & children. Meeting for Worship begins at 11 AM, including further meditations on covenant in the Gospels. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee meets at 1 PM.

3) Plans are still in flux for a visit to the Secrest/Miche family in Lakeport on Sunday afternoon. We don’t yet have a confirmed time, but if they are scheduling a meeting for worship for the middle of the afternoon, it will be necessary to leave just after we conclude worship here. If you are interested, please let me know, and if you need a ride or can offer one.

We hope you will join us!
