What’s going in at Berkeley Friends Church

This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, Work Day, Sunday School & Worship, Nonviolent Peace Force

Dear Friends:

Much activity this weekend at BFC:

1) Tomorrow, Friday, 9/26, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This month’s film is the 2012 Chilean drama No. It’s an engaging portrayal that follows a hot-shot ad executive who creates a controversial media campaign opposing military dictator Augusto Pinochet during the referendum on Pinochet’s presidency in 1988. In Spanish with English subtitles; strong language advisory. See attached for more.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Doors open for refreshments at 6:30 PM; film at 7:00, with discussion following.

2) On Saturday, 9/27, we will have a Work Day to take care of the grounds. We’ll be concentrating on trimming trees & bushes, weeding, and other outside tasks. We’ll work from 10 AM to 2 PM; please bring your gardening tools and a brown bag lunch!

3) On Sunday, 9/28, things start at 10 AM with our regular Sunday School classes for adults & children. Meeting for Worship begins at 11 AM, with song, prayer, a spoken meditation, and corporate waiting on the Lord. Fellowship time follows worship, and then at 1 PM, the Peace, Environment, and Christian Social Concerns Committee will have a special presentation on Nonviolent Peace Force. NVPF uses unarmed civilian peacekeeping as a tool to reduce violence and protect civilians in conflict zones. Please stick around to hear about this important work!

We hope you will join us for some or all of this

This weekend @BFC: Memorial for Len Williams, Singing Ensemble, Sunday School, Worship, Baby Dedication, Monthly Meeting

Dear Friends:

1) This Saturday, 9/20, we will gather to celebrate the life of Lynn Leonard (Len) Williams. Service begins at 1 PM. We will need help with setup starting at 11:30 AM; if you can help and haven’t yet told me, please drop me a line.

2) On Sunday, 9/21, the Singing Ensemble will start things off with rehearsal at 9 AM; then our regular Sunday School classes for children and adults will meet at 10 AM. We gather for worship at 11 AM, with our regular monthly extended time of open worship, and a special observance: welcoming baby Leila Remington Bowie into our meeting and dedicating her to the Lord! The Singing Ensemble will also offer ministry in music.

The monthly potluck lunch follows worship; please bring a dish to share if you can, or a few dollars to help with the purchase of supplies. (If you are bringing something to eat, please also bring a list of ingredients so that people know what’s in your dish.) Then at 1 PM, there will be our Monthly Meeting with a Concern for Business. Members should please attend, and all others are welcome.

Please join us as we celebrate both the end and the beginning of life–trusting that all things are in God’s hands.

New Groups Forming this Fall: The Good and Beautiful God

Dear Friends:

Are you wanting to go deeper in your life with God? Have you ever been frustrated when it seems like you’re not making progress? Would you like the opportunity to learn with and support others in the journey towards Christ-likeness? The Good & Beautiful God

Ministry and Counsel is forming one or more small groups to engage in a quarter-long study this fall of The Good and Beautiful God by James Bryan Smith. Smith is a well-regarded Christian writer who teaches at Friends University (Wichita, KS) and has worked with Richard Foster’s Renovare movement for many years.

The Good and Beautiful God starts from the understanding that we all carry around with us many false narratives about God: “God wants me to try harder;” “God blesses me when I’m good and punishes me when I’m bad;” “God is angry with me.” Smith asks us to consider if the “God that Jesus knew” is truly embodied in these narratives, or if the Gospels actually have a different story to tell.

Participants will read through a chapter a week, engage individually in each chapter’s recommended exercises, and then come to the group meeting ready to reflect on their experience and prayerfully support one another. One possible meeting time would be on Wednesday evenings parallel to our regular Bible Study, but we encourage any group of sufficient size (three or four people) to form if there are other more convenient times or places.

If you are interested, please see Brian for more details!

This weekend @BFC: AVP workshop, Green Bags, Trustees, Sunday School, Kirsten Bohl speaking, MOCE

Dear Friends:

It’s a very full weekend at Berkeley Friends Church this time around–and much of August is going to be busy!

1) This Saturday, 8/2, we host the first of a two-part Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) workshop. AVP offers experiential, hands-on workshops that empower people to lead nonviolent lives through affirmation, respect for all, community building, cooperation, creative conflict resolution and trust. The workshop  is a full day; registration & snacks are at 8:30 AM, and the program begins at 9. The second workshop will be Saturday, 8/16. A sliding-scale donation is requested. For more information, see the attached flyer, and if you want to register, contact Dorothy Kakimoto ASAP.

2) Then, on Sunday, 8/3, don’t forget that we are going to bring all of the church’s contributions for the Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project together so we can give thanks and pray for all of the hungry folks in our community. Don’t forget to bring that green bag with you when you leave the house on Sunday, and bring it with you into worship!

That morning, the Trustees Committee will begin the day, meeting at 9 AM. Then, at 10 AM, we’ll have Sunday School classes for children and adults. In meeting for worship at 11 AM, we will gather in shared prayer and quiet, with Kirsten Bohl sharing a message entitled “Sing A New Song,” drawing on Psalm 98, the story of Zacchaeus in  Luke 19, and other texts. Kirsten, Nikki and the younger people will also help us sing a new song together!

Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Missionary, Outreach and Christian Education Committee will meet at 1 PM.

Please join us!

Tonight and this Sunday @BFC:

Hi everybody–

1) Tonight, Friday, 7/25, is our monthly Friday Night at the Movies. This month is the 2011 drama The Wise Kids. Set in and around a Southern Baptist church, this coming-of-age drama focuses on three main characters: Brea, an introspective pastor’s daughter; the hyperactive Laura, Brea’s best friend and a devout believer; and Tim, the open-hearted son of a single father, disclosing his homosexuality for the first time. Tensions and buried feelings abound as the youth choose colleges and adults behave badly; the trio attempt to hold on to what they have while yearning to break free.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00, discussion to follow.

2) On Sunday, 7/27, we’ll begin at 10 AM, with our Sunday School classes for children and adults. In meeting for worship at 11 AM, we will seek the Living God together in prayer, song,  a message from Romans 8, and silence. Fellowship time follows worship, and then the Peace, Environment and Christian Social Concerns Committee will meet at 1 PM.

Please join us!

This weekend @BFC: Movie Night, CFC, Singing Ensemble, Green Bags, Worship, PECSC, organ recital and more!

The end of the month is often full at BFC, but this week, look out! We’ll be busy all weekend, with…1) Friday Night at the Movies this Friday, 3/28: this month we offer the compelling 2012 documentary A Place at the Table. This film uses personal stories, colorful graphics and an array of sobering statistics to illuminate the plight of the 49 million Americans struggling with food insecurity. Those of you who volunteer at the Food Pantry know plenty about this crisis, but this film gives an additional perspective that is not to be missed. See attached flyer for more details.

ADMISSION IS FREE! Refreshments at 6:30 PM, film at 7:00, discussion to follow.

2) The quarterly gathering of the Christian Friends Conference, all day on Saturday, 3/29: you are invited to take part in waiting worship and Bible reading in the manner of Conservative Friends, and to share fellowship and  discussion with Christian Quakers from around the Bay Area and beyond. 9 AM – 4:30 PM. Beverages and bagels will be provided in the morning; please bring your own lunch. See the second  file attached for the full schedule.

3) Our weekly gathering for worship, learning and fellowship on Sunday, 3/30: first off, we will be collecting the church’s contributions to the Berkeley Neighborhood Food Project a week early, so please bring your greeen bags with you and bring them into worship!

We’ll begin at 9 AM, with a Singing Ensemble rehearsal. Then at 10 AM, our Sunday School classes for children and adults, including the membership/Quakerism class, will meet. In meeting for worship at 11 AM, we will seek the Living God together in prayer, song from the congregation and the Singing Ensemble,  a message from the Scriptures, and silence. Fellowship time follows worship; the Peace, Environment and Christian Social Concerns Committee will meet during this time, from 12:30 to 1:30 PM.

4) A special event on Sunday afternoon, 3/30: in celebration of his 85th birthday, Charles Blue would like to invite everyone to an organ mini-recital at St Paul Lutheran Church, 1658 Excelsior Avenue in Oakland, at 2 PM. Carpooling may be possible; check with Charles or Brian to see who will be going.

Blessings to all!

This Sunday @BFC: Singing Ensemble, Sunday School, Worship, Monthly Meeting

Dear Friends:

This Sunday, 3/16, the Singing Ensemble will rehearse at 9 AM. Sunday School classes for children and adults, including the Quakerism class, meet at 10 AM. The Body gathers for worship at 11 AM, with shared song, prayer, and our monthly extended time of waiting upon the Lord in stillness.

Our monthly potluck lunch follows worship; please bring a dish to share if you can, or a few dollars to help with the purchase of supplies. (If you are bringing something to eat, please also bring a list of ingredients so that people know what’s in your dish.) Then at 1 PM, there will be the Monthly Meeting with a Concern for Business. Members should please attend, and all others are welcome.

Note that while the Singing Ensemble will rehearse this Sunday, there will not be a presentation until later this month.

Finally, I would appreciate your prayers for the Friends World Committee counsultation in Sacramento this weekend–for all those traveling, and that this would be an opportunity for God to open our hearts to one another in mutual listening and love.

I will be in the office on Monday and Tuesday of this coming week; please be in touch if you need anything.
